Music students earn opportunity to showcase talents

Three students from the College of Music and Media at Loyola University New Orleans will showcase their talents with the Loyola Symphony Orchestra, directed by Dr. Jean Montès.

Adam Mayon, a piano performance sophomore from Morgan City, La., and soprano Mary Penick Akin, a music with elective studies senior from River Ridge, La., were winners of the 2008 Loyola Concerto and Aria Competition. Julia Howell, a music composition senior from Wonalancet, N.H., was the winner of the 2008 Loyola Composition Contest. Held each November, the Loyola Concerto and Aria Competition and Loyola Composition Contest allow Loyola music students to compete for an opportunity to collaborate with the LSO.
The LSO performance takes place Saturday, April 18, at 7:30 p.m., in Roussel Performance Hall, located in the Communications/Music Complex on Loyola’s main campus. The performance is free and open to the public.

Mayon will perform Concerto No. 2, Op. 1, in F Major, by Sergei Rachmaninoff; and Akin will perform "Les Oiseau dans la Chamille," by Jacques Offenbach. The orchestra will also premiere Howell's composition, "Nocturne Marine."
In addition to the individual student performances, the LSO will also perform Symphony No. 8 in b minor, “Unfinished Symphony,” by Franz Schubert.
