Even though COVID-19 shut down physical theatre in New Orleans for many months, this was not a year without performances of all kinds. In his “Trodding the Boards Year in Review'' of 2020, Brain Sands wrapped up this unusual year for Ambush Magazine, a local magazine with a focus on LGBTQ+ news. Sands’s wrap-up featured TAD’s Theatre for One as well as several Loyola alumni and staff.
Sands noted that Loyola TAD produced the “first live performance in Orleans Parish since March” when Theatre For One: For This Moment opened in October. He praised the department for its ability to create in such “unique circumstances.”
Sands also highlighted several Loyola TAD alumni in his article for their performances pre-pandemic. He celebrated Goat in the Road’s production of The Uninvited which starred alumni Ian Hoch and Jessica Lozano with costumes by our very own Kaci Thomassie. Sands also recognized The NOLA Project’s production of Harry and The Thief starring TAD alum Monica Harris.
The Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans, still in residence at Loyola, was also highlighted in his article. Sands mentioned its Zoom staged reading of Lysistrata, noting it “is no less relevant for being 2,500 years old.”
Sands gave a touching tribute to Sherri Marina, local New Orleans actress and professor of Black Theatre at Loyola last fall. Marina passed away after a battle with cancer at the end of 2020 and her presence at Loyola and in New Orleans will always be remembered.
