Co-Artistic Director of Theatre Company in Residence Publishes Book on Tennessee Williams

Tennessee Williams 101 by Augustin J. Correro, Co-Artistic Director of the Tennessee Williams Theatre Company of New Orleans, will be available for purchase in bookstores and online February 22. Correro has been a long-time lover of Tennessee Williams, and, after a while, he said his “brain turned into a vault of Williams trivia.”

The idea for his book has been in the works for nearly a decade thanks to this trivia vault, beginning as a lecture Correro gave at events and festivals. He said audience members would often tell him the lecture would make a great book. “When Pelican approached me to make the book happen, it was easy to say yes,” said Correro.

Tennessee Williams 101 is a 224-page journey through the life and works of Tennessee Williams. “There are some great 400-500-page biographies out there, but this book will be great for anyone who wants to dive in or just have a quick reference guide,” said Correro. He noted that the book showcases Tennessee Williams in a fresh light, using bullet points, various theatre tidbits, and context to make Williams’s history easy to digest.

Correro said that translating a one-hour lecture into 50,000 words and deadlines were the scariest parts of creating the book. “There are many huge books about Williams, so there was certainly enough material to fill the pages. Just finding a fresh angle and not leaving anything significant out was a concern,” he said. Thanks to the pandemic shutting things down, he was able to take the time to knock out the 50,000 words quicker than anticipated.

“I can’t wait for folks to read the book,” he said. “I hope readers appreciate how layered and interwoven his life and works are.”
